He was Pierced: A Poem

JesusPassion

To make us precious, He was pierced
To make us whole, He was stripped
To make us beautiful, He was beaten
To make us shine, He took the shame

To make us blessed, He became cursed
To deliver us from bondage, He was bound
To make us sound, He was spat upon
To make us worthy, He wore the crown of thorns

To make us full, He emptied Himself
To give us abundant life, He gave His life
To make us bold, He gave His blood
To make us friends of God, He became foe

He gave up His all, so that we may become His all
He took the fall, so we may not fall
To turn around is to let His love abound
To be like Him, to ever follow Him

The song that turned my life..

Song that turned my life

With a heavy heart and with no hope was I and that week was when I was at my weakest and weariest moments. With no end to the family crises and cries, I had lost all hope of peace and was at my wit’s end. That dream was haunting me every night. What was I seeing? I am deep down in a dark well and shouting for help.. darkness and hopelessness all over me.. who will take me out of this.. is there anyone..?

The year was 1998 and I wished not to see yet another year.. I wanted to end my life. But that day was to be etched in my memory forever and my life was to turn for the best.

As usual I went to my school. One of our teachers had become a believer of Christ in those months.. He gave an open invitation to the class to come and take part in prayer one evening. Prabhu took me there, to our school chapel where the prayer was going on. It was the very first time I was attending a prayer meeting like that.

Though I could not make much sense of it all one thing stayed in my mind. As I was cycling back home the words of the song that they sung kept ringing in my ears,

நான் உன்னை விட்டு விலகுவதில்லை நான் உன்னை என்றும் கைவிடுவதில்லை
நான் உன்னை காண்கின்ற தேவன் கண்மணிப் போல் உன்னைக் காப்பேன்

(A Tamil song based on the Bible verse Deu 31:6-8 / Josh 1:5)

I was hearing this song for the very first time and the words were penetrating my heart. As I reached home, I went into a room and as I fell on my knees the meaning of the words dawned on me, that it was God who was speaking to me, “I will not leave you nor forsake you.. do not fear nor be dismayed”.

Tears were rolling down on my cheeks and peace began ruling my heart. My search for peace, joy, meaning in life ended in Jesus and it started my relationship with Him and I repented of my sins and committed my life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Today, 27th November 2014 nearly 16 years after this wonderful day I could meet in person the writer of this song, Fr. S.J. Berchmans. It was a blessed occasion to meet him as he has come to Bihar to minister in GEMS Gospel meeting that starts from this evening.

With Berchmans Fr

It was marvellous to look back and see how the Lord at the right time in my life used his song to touch and save me. I have always admired his Scripture based songs and today as I met him was attracted to his Simplicity. God bless this Servant of God!

This was also a reminder to me that every effort, small or big in God’s kingdom does not go waste. We have to faithfully do what God has called each one of us to do.

Towards the Goal: Poem

 Finishing line

Press On.. Press On.. Press On..

Press on towards the goal

Pushing away all that’s pulling you

Press on to get THE PRIZE!

Praying keeps you pressing forward

Praying for others be your priority

Pray for their spiritual progress

Pray for all who partner with you!

Press on during persecution

It’s a privilege to suffer for Him

Remember there is a joy after every problem

Remember your prize is waiting for you!

People live with their own purpose

In their midst remember His purpose

Keeping yourself pure, shine for Him

To receive the prize He has kept for you!

Push away the crave for worldly power

Push away the pride of achievements

Look for the power you get from Him

Laying down the power you possess!

Preferring people’s profit over privileges

Foregoing your profitable things

Laying aside your perishable things

Will make you run towards the prize!

Forfeiting peace will make you forget the goal

Never forget this precious rule

Pour out your concerns in His feet

Pursue peace to receive THE PRIZE!

This Poem is penned by Sis. Sheela Duthie w/o Bro. Rajesh Duthie based on the Sermon that I delivered one Sunday at GEMS Church in Sikaria, Bihar.

To See Someone Smile & Succeed!

1_Yuvraj, Kohli & Dhoni

It was wonderful watching the way India bat and chase the decent total put on board by the South Africa Team, in the T20 World Cup match yesterday. Though not a big die-hard fan of Cricket, I could not resist the urge to write about that one moment. Yes, that moment when in the very last Over, not choosing to strike the winning shot, the Indian Captain MS Dhoni consciously gave away that moment of glory to his teammate Virat Kohli. “Ah! What a man!” was my only expression. Dhoni had scored NO runs (in this match) but had won ALL hearts. What a beautiful quality and value that Dhoni was emulating! To the interviewer Harsha Bhogle who commented on this act of Dhoni he replied, “He (Kohli) deserved it”.

As I was pondering upon this I recalled to memory an incident in the life of Sir Isaac Newton. I was watching NatGeo’s program ‘Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey’ a few days back where host Neil was presenting some portions of Newton’s life. What inspired me was the part played by Edmund Halley in Isaac Newton’s life. Halley, Sir Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke were trying to find out the scientific explanation for planetary motion – what kept the planets, revolving around the Sun from not falling into the Sun or flying into space.

Halley & Newton

At this juncture Halley remembers Isaac Newton and goes to meet him at his home. Only there he discovers that Newton has confined himself to his home, avoiding all public appearances for 15 long years owing to the embarrassment that he went through because of the false allegations of Hooke that Newton had copied the concepts involving light and gravity from him.

4_Newton's s PrincipiaAnd to Halley’s surprise, Newton had discovered the explanation of planetary motion five years earlier! Halley encourages Newton to publish all his works into a book, but it were as though that they fell into deaf ears. Halley approaches the Royal Society on this matter only to know that it is in heavy debts due to the poor sale of a previous publication, ‘History of Fish’. So much so that even Halley was paid his salary not in money but in-kind, copies of that book! He persuades the Royal Society, subdues the rivalry between Hooke & Newton, encourages Newton to work on the book, edits it and publishes it by his own efforts, but in Newton’s name. If not for Halley this world would not have had the greatest scientific discoveries through The Principia and much of Newton’s major discoveries would have largely remained unknown. In the Scientific world when academic publications are considered the pinnacle of one’s success, here is a man, a Scientist who not caring about his name or fame, takes all the pain, to publish another person’s works!

Dietrich BonhoefferUnfortunately, these are only exceptions and not the norm of any society or time. Reading from the book ‘Bonhoeffer-Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy’ this morning I found in one of the pages the author writes about this incident in Bonhoeffer’s life when as a 22-year-old young man he goes to Barcelona to take up his first ministry assignment as Assistant Pastor. As incharge of the Sunday School his first class had only one girl! Hardworking Bonhoeffer could turn that into thirty within two weeks time. In the absence of the Pastor Olbricht, Bonhoeffer was scheduled to preach on Sundays. The author Eric Metaxas writes, “On Easter, with Olbricht away, Bonhoeffer preached again and the next week too. Each time he challenged his hearers and somehow won them over, It soon happened that whenever Bonhoeffer was scheduled to preach, the congregation grew noticeably. Olbricht noticed and promptly discontinued announcing the preaching schedule!”

On the contrary, reading this I remember Barnabas of the Bible who brought the persecutor-turned-preacher Saul to the apostles, to the limelight. So much so that after a few chapters Barnabas’ name disappears and Paul’s dominates!

6_Barnabas & Paul

“Back in Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him. They didn’t trust him one bit. Then Barnabas took him under his wing. He introduced him to the apostles and stood up for him, told them how Saul had seen and spoken to the Master on the Damascus Road and how in Damascus itself he had laid his life on the line with his bold preaching in Jesus’ name. After that he was accepted as one of them, going in and out of Jerusalem with no questions asked, uninhibited as he preached in the Master’s name.” (Acts 9:26-29a MSG)

Naturally, everyone seeks his or her own success. But Jesus says,

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.” (John 14:12 NKJV)

Imploring the reader to have this same mind as that of Jesus (Philip 2:5), Paul exhorts,

“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3,4 NKJV)

Someone needs encouragement more than me

Someone needs help more than I do

Someone needs to taste success more than me

Let me put smile on someone’s face and not sadness

Let me strive to make someone succeed & not stumble

Let me rejoice & not recoil at the regard of someone else

You know what’s the secret behind these to become our lifestyle? LOVE. Paul sums it beautifully in his letter to the Corinthians,

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Cor 13:4-7 NKJV)

Let love of God increase in us and let us strive to see someone smile & succeed!

I don’t want to be a Fool!!

April-foolAs a child and school boy I have enjoyed playing pranks at school and at home on this day, the April Fool’s day. As all do, I wanted to fool as many as possible on this day and to be cautious to not be fooled by anyone! Is it that with the growth of my wisdom teeth went away the pranks? Hmmm.. Can’t say! They did eventually go away, but what shall I credit that too??

I did not want to be a fool anyway and dictionary defines it, a fool is a “person who lacks good judgment”. Oh, so it is to do with “judgment”, that is to “form a opinion by judging something”.

But the problem is “opinions” differ! So, how can someone come to the conclusion whether the judgment is “good” or “bad”?

He or she needs to have a frame of reference; but one that which is not “relative” but “absolute”. For anyone to have the absolute “frame of reference” it has to originate from a “source” that which is independent of the person or any individual for that matter. We shall call that as the “good frame of reference” that which enables anyone to make “good judgment”.

Here we are faced with another problem. How to define “good”? Is “good” absolute or relative? If it is relative then what is bad for you may be good for me! So here again “good” needs an external absolute frame of reference.

Jesus said, “No one is good but One, that is, God” (Luke 18:19). This He said when a young rich ruler questioned Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit life?” (18:18)

Ok, so if only God is good and Jesus is good, who is Jesus? (Make the “good judgment”).

The Bible says in Psalm 14:1, “The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.” (NIV)

Mankind is corrupt and no one does good, because no one is good! And so our judgments cannot be good, without the reference, God!

Jesus Christ talks about a person who is engrossed in making money and storing up wealth for himself -

“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

To know God, to know Jesus Christ is to be wise. True wisdom is in this.

“And this is the real and eternal life: that they know you, the one and only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent.” (John 17:3 MSG)

I don’t want to be a fool.

You?

The Amusing Child at the Airport

Child hiding face“He is such an entertainment” were the only words that came out of my mind as I sat looking at this little boy who was self-amused and served as an amusement to the onlookers and the passengers at the Varanasi Airport.

Fair cute little boy was he, may be three years of age, who was with his mother. He would roll on the smooth shining floor in the lounge; run around and go into the open ‘Annapurna’ shop, to receive a welcoming gesture from the shopkeeper. He would not stop at that. He takes the products arranged in the shelves and his mother comes running behind chiding him for “stealing” from the shop!

He goes behind the woman that mops the floor and tries to hold the stick that is held in her hand, only to be stopped by her who dreads that he would “dirty” himself.

When anyone walking through the lounge would stretch out his or her hand towards him, he would go and hold onto their finger, willing to be led by that stranger!

Fearing that he would hurt himself or bump against someone or something, every now and then his mother comes after him, picks him and takes him to her place. When he resists, she puts him inside the luggage trolley, from which he finds no way of escape. There he goes – he tries all means to appease his mother so that he could be put down on the floor.

Loving mother she is, who after lecturing him puts him down, only to find her boy getting back to the same old amusements. There is a sudden turn of events.

After a little while of being amused the little boy lifts up his head only to find his mother missing. He cranes his neck to the left and to the right, but he couldn’t find her. His eyes widen with anxiety and fear. He gets up from the floor and with the words “mummy… mummy” he runs to the sofa, crying and there she peeps out from behind the luggage-loaded trolley! His cry turns to a laughter the very moment.

Ah! If only I could have recorded it!

How much we all resemble that child in our relationship with God! We try to run away from Him; to be amused with other things; willing to be led by strangers; going behind everything that seems to give us pleasure. And we “think” that’s the best way to enjoy and to “feel” the freedom.

It would be terrible if God hides from us; if we are to be forgotten by Him. At times like that do we cry like David?

“How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?” (Psalms 13:1)

Let the realization of David come to us -

“Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.” (Psalm 139:7-10)

And let us pray like David to become close with God once again,

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23, 24)

Taking my sin, my cross, my shame
Rising up again, I bless Your name
You are my all in all

When I fall down You pick me up
When I am dry You fill my cup
You are my all in all

Jesus, Lamb of God
Worthy is Your name
Jesus, Lamb of God
Worthy is Your name

You are my strength when I am weak
You are the treasure that I seek
You are my all in all

January to December: A Poem

Worry

Started January with a lot of worry?

That prolonged through February?

Marched through March with weary?

And at the end of April do you feel sad and sorry?

I pray this May may bring gaiety,

As June may soon take away your problems weighty;

And you may fly as July comes by and you become lively,

Then comes August and it’s time to rest so that you may not become sickly.

But in September if you wonder at the set in weariness and heaviness,

You don’t need to waver until October to know the reason for your sadness;

Now is better than never and of course November, the reason is sinfulness,

But remember before December that Jesus Christ died for your sins and He offers forgiveness.

வாலிபனின் ஜெபம்–7 (Youth Prayer)

Praying Youth_Repentance

6 (Youth Prayer)

Youth Quest
