As a child and school boy I have enjoyed playing pranks at school and at home on this day, the April Fool’s day. As all do, I wanted to fool as many as possible on this day and to be cautious to not be fooled by anyone! Is it that with the growth of my wisdom teeth went away the pranks? Hmmm.. Can’t say! They did eventually go away, but what shall I credit that too??
I did not want to be a fool anyway and dictionary defines it, a fool is a “person who lacks good judgment”. Oh, so it is to do with “judgment”, that is to “form a opinion by judging something”.
But the problem is “opinions” differ! So, how can someone come to the conclusion whether the judgment is “good” or “bad”?
He or she needs to have a frame of reference; but one that which is not “relative” but “absolute”. For anyone to have the absolute “frame of reference” it has to originate from a “source” that which is independent of the person or any individual for that matter. We shall call that as the “good frame of reference” that which enables anyone to make “good judgment”.
Here we are faced with another problem. How to define “good”? Is “good” absolute or relative? If it is relative then what is bad for you may be good for me! So here again “good” needs an external absolute frame of reference.
Jesus said, “No one is good but One, that is, God” (Luke 18:19). This He said when a young rich ruler questioned Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit life?” (18:18)
Ok, so if only God is good and Jesus is good, who is Jesus? (Make the “good judgment”).
The Bible says in Psalm 14:1, “The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.” (NIV)
Mankind is corrupt and no one does good, because no one is good! And so our judgments cannot be good, without the reference, God!
Jesus Christ talks about a person who is engrossed in making money and storing up wealth for himself -
“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
To know God, to know Jesus Christ is to be wise. True wisdom is in this.
“And this is the real and eternal life: that they know you, the one and only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent.” (John 17:3 MSG)
I don’t want to be a fool.
You?
