Time was near for more than 2000 people in April
100 years ago!
15th April 1912
Something very real happened that night
Which the movies failed to show
He was a passenger in the Titanic.
By 10 pm John had finished his devotions & gone to sleep
At 11:40 pm the iceberg was struck
He was heard saying “women & children first”
And even encouraging Christians to give up their places in the lifeboats for others.
Harper gave his life jacket to a man that did not have one
“Do you know the Lord” he said,
“no” came the response.
“Then you need this more than I”
Four years after the Titanic went down, a young Scotchman rose in a meeting in Hamilton, Canada, and said, "I am a survivor of the Titanic. When I was drifting alone on a spar that awful night, the tide brought Mr. John Harper, of Glasgow, also on a piece of wreck near me. 'Man,' he said, 'are you saved?' 'No,' I said. 'I am not.' He replied, 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.'"
"The waves bore him away; but, strange to say brought him back a little later, and he said, 'Are you saved now?' 'No,' I said, 'I cannot honestly say that I am.' He said again, 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved,' and shortly after he went down; and there, alone in the night, and with two miles of water under me, I believed. Then there, with two miles of water beneath me, in my desperation I cried to save me. I believed and was saved.”
One of the last survivors to leave the Titanic said that he saw Harper ask the band to play “Nearer My God To Thee”
Time is Near
Dying men seldom lie they say. For John Harper nothing seemed important or precious, but only Jesus. He could have saved his life. He could have used the time to save his possessions. But he knew that even after his death, he will live in eternity. He had this hope! And counted it worthy and precious to pass on Jesus to all those he could!
It is time for you to come near to God and know the Saviour Lord Jesus Christ.
Because He is the Way, the Truth & the Life.
Only He truly Saves!
